Wine Definition of the Day

Visit Us on the Web – Click Here Here is today's wine related definition: "APPELLATION CONTRÔLÉE" - This will come as no surprise: the French are great bureaucrats.  A wine with the term Appellation Contrôlée (or, AOC) on its label has been put through “the ringer” by the French wine authorities and will have met with a whole host of French regulations.  Certain criterion that are reviewed when looking to grant the AOC designation include grape variety, maximum yield, minimum ageing, etc.  However, it is important to note that just because a bottle is given the AOC designation doesn't mean that what is in the bottle will be of any good or of any interest.
